![]() In the seaside town of Malahide (Mullach Ide) stands Malahide castle in grounds of around 250 acres (100 ha). the castle dates from about the 14th century, with additions made over the centuries such its rounded towers. Malahide castle originally served as a fortress but later became the stately home of the Talbot family until 1973. The Talbots were avid supporters of King James II: on the morning of the Battle of Boyne (1690) fourteen members of the Talbot family breakfasted in the Great Hall in the castle and none of them came back for supper that evening. Visitors to the castle can get a guided tour around the castle to view 18th century Irish furniture and various portrait paintings of the Talbot family as well as that of Wolf Tone part of a collection that are on loan from the National Gallery. While at Malahide castle you can visit the 'Fry Model railway' that is based at what was the corn store of Malahide castle. the collection of trains was started by Cyril Fry from 1920 who was a local railway engineer. the exhibition is set in 2500sq ft (240 sq m) |
