Battle Of The Boyne |
||||||||
| In 1688 the Catholic King of England, King James II (James VII), was disposed of, and was replaced by his Protestant daughter and her husband, Mary and William of Orange (William III). King James II was determined to get his thrown back and called on the support of 25,000 French and Irish Catholics and give battle in Oldbridge by River Boyne located west of Drogheda town, on the east coast of Ireland. The battle took place on the 1st July 1690 leading to the defeat to the 36,000 hardened army of French Huguenots, English, Scots and Dutch. King James II fled to France and left behind a Protestant Ireland that continued that way for the next 300 years. |
